Essiac: A Modern Folk Remedy

The story of Essiac began over 100 years ago in a small mining camp in Northern Ontario, with an Englishwoman by the name of Mrs. Johnson.

A Native medicine man gave her some herbs to treat her breast cancer.  Many years later she gave the formula to Canadian Nurse Rene Caisse, who went on to develop the four-herb remedy known as Essiac.

Another Englishwoman has carried Essiac into the 21st century – Mali KleinTogether with her writing partner Sheila Snow, she has authored four books that stand unparalleled in accurately telling the story of Rene Caisse and sharing of a wealth of practical information on how to grow the Essiac herbs and how to make and take the various Essiac formulae.  Additional information not found in The Complete Essiac Essentials book is contained in this video.

Mali has been involved with Essiac for nearly 20 years, conducting seminars worldwide and doing extensive research and experimentation with the herbs.  She experienced Essiac’s positive impact on her husband’s quality of life as they journeyed together with his cancer diagnosis.  She set up the Clouds Trust, an Essiac charity in the UK, where she operated a Cancer helpline for over nine years.

Sheila Snow Fraser (1929 - 2008) worked directly with Rene Caisse, and spent nearly three decades documenting the Essiac story.  Her extensive Essiac Archive collection tells a story that is still unfolding. “I think that old Essiac did work…there will be a resurgence of interest.  I’m not pessimistic about the long view for Essiac.”Dr. John Barker, 1977

Last but perhaps most, Mali shares information and insights on how to live with a tough diagnosis and even be empowered by it.The story of Rene Caisse and Essiac is quite remarkable.  May you enjoy witnessing the telling of it in this US talk given October 14, 2010.Total running time:  1 hr. 30 mins.
