I Was Canada’s Cancer Nurse

This booklet was written by Rene Caisse in 1963, at age 75. She tells the story of Essiac, beginning with her introduction to the Native American formula in the 1920s, to her subsequent development and refinement of the Essiac formulae. All the excitement of those Essiac heydays of the 1920s and 1930s, when she came within three votes in the Canadian Parliament of being allowed to practice medicine as a nurse, based on the remarkable success she was having treating patients at her Essiac cancer clinic in Bracebridge, Ontario, is recounted, along with the subsequent disappointment and frustrations.

Unlike the trajectory of some of the other alternative cancer remedies of the day, such as Harry Hoxsey's medicines, and Max Gerson's therapies, Rene Caisse did not up the ante on Essiac with any more court challenges and did not set up any clinics in Mexico. Instead, she retired from the limelight, quietly continued to supply her patients, and in this quiet way, Essiac has kept its place at the table, as the People's modern folk remedy.
